Greening of the Single Farm Payment in contrasting agricultural landscapes

The objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) have changed in tack with agriculture’s modernization; in particular the focus has shifted from subsidizing food production to paying for public goods (for instance ecosystem services such as carbon storage, conservation of biodiversity and cultural landscapes).

In 2015 two general reforms were made to the CAP, the convergence and greening of the single farm payment scheme; that is by 2019 farmers throughout Sweden will receive an identical payment per hectare agricultural land and to receive the full payment they must also comply with new environmental obligations. The aim of this project is to evaluate how the reform will affect agricultural development and environmental values associated with agricultural landscapes in contrasting regions in Sweden. This will be done with the help of simulations with the AgriPoliS model which considers farmers adjustment potential and agricultural development in the longer term time (to 2020). We will discuss the effects of the current CAP and how it might be improved in the future to achieve its stated goals.

The project is expected to be completed by spring 2018.
