Welcome to AgriFood Economics Centre

-bridging science and policy

The AgriFood Economics Centre provides economic expertise in the fields of food, agriculture, fishing and rural development. The Centre, which consists of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Lund University, is a platform for applied research. The aim is to supply government bodies with a solid foundation supporting strategic and long- term policy choices.

Competition in the food supply chain

In a recently delivered report, commissioned by the Government, the Swedish Competition Authority analyzes the competitive situation in the Swedish food supply chain. AgriFood has contributed to the work and the results are presented in two reports and two working papers: i) Competition and power in the Swedish food supply chain, ii) Location and competition in the food retail market, iii) Price transmission in the Swedish food supply chain, and iv) Agricultural cooperatives.

ITQs in Swedish demersal fisheries

This is shown in a report to Expertgruppen för Miljöstudier, where Anton Paulrud and Staffan Waldo analyze how the Swedish fishing fleet structure and profitability might develop in an ITQ system. The report shows that with an ITQ system it is possible to achieve sufficient profit to provide competitive salaries, that the fleet can be reduced by 30 to 50 percent, and that management can be designed to benefit small-scale fisheries.Read more
