Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Waste in the Nordic Aquatic Food System

In many of the Nordic countries, the production of fish, shellfish, and other seafood is important. The carbon footprint can vary greatly between different seafood products, and it is important to identify areas for improvement and take measures to reduce climate impact. The largest emissions usually occur at the primary stage of the value chain, i.e., in fishing or aquaculture.

The project aims to identify greenhouse gas emissions in Nordic aquatic food production. We will also calculate emissions in different parts of the value chain and see how these vary between countries. As part of the project, we will also identify where waste occurs in the Nordic aquatic food system.

The project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and is carried out in collaboration with partners in other Nordic countries under the leadership of NOFIMA (The Norwegian food research institute). The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
