The price of Northern shrimp differs depending on the size of the shrimp, where a larger shrimp entails a higher price. This price difference creates incentives to use more selective gear that sorts out the larger shrimps from the smaller ones, but the use of this kind of gear creates higher costs. Moreover, the size distribution in the catch depends not only on the gear that is used but also on the size distribution of the stock.
The purpose of the analysis is to evaluate the economic performance of the Swedish shrimp fishing fleet and compare the results when using different gear.
The project is in collaboration with the Department of Aquatic Resources at SLU and will be completed in spring 2016.
