In Sweden, as in many other EU countries, farmers are getting older. This has been highlighted as a problem for the future of agriculture and thereby future food security. However, the age structure, challenges, and the measures applied in EU countries differ considerably.
In this project, we contribute to a better understanding of the conditions and policy instruments that can promote a generational shift in Sweden. This is done by analysing the lessons that can be learned from a selection of other EU countries based on age structure, agricultural conditions, and, not least, the measures the countries have applied to achieve a generational renewal in agriculture. The analysis is based on a literature review and descriptive statistics. The project will be completed during the summer of 2026.
