Local or global prices for coastal cod fisheries in Sweden?

World markets heavily influence the port side prices paid to Swedish fishermen, at least for fish heading for the international market. The topic of this study is to analyse if this is the case also for small-scale fisheries where the products are supplied to local markets. This is analysed using econometric methods for Swedish small-scale cod fisheries. Further, the study gives examples of how actors in different parts of the value chain (processors, wholesale, retail) reason regarding the choice between local and imported fish.

The study is part of a larger project analysing price integration between imports and prices to small-scale fisheries in the EU. The project contains an analysis at the EU level and three case studies: cod in Sweden, octopus in Spain, and lobster in France. The project is financed by DG Mare. The project will end in spring 2021.
