Trade War with the USA – How the EU Agricultural Market Is Affected
The USA has recently increased its tariffs on nearly all goods, creating uncertainty in the global market. The EU is considering responding to these tariffs with its own tariffs on imports from the USA. This study examines trade between the EU and the USA in agricultural products and food, as well as the potential consequences of an escalating trade war. The results show that the USA is an important market for olive oil, olives, and wine, but that the impact of higher tariffs is limited. Prices for these three export products decrease by 1–1.5 percent. The most important import from the USA is soybeans for animal feed, but this product is excluded from the European Commission's list of potential countermeasures.
