Compensation for farmers’ carbon sequestration

By 2045 at the latest, Sweden is envisioned to reach the target of net zero atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve the target, both extensive emission reductions and an increased uptake of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere are needed. One possibility regarding the latter could be to encourage increased carbon sequestration in agricultural soils by offering farmers a financial compensation to adopt management practices that increase the carbon rate in agricultural soils.

In this project, a literature review of carbon sequestration is performed with a view to analyze lessons, challenges and opportunities with respect to policy instruments for carbon sequestration from a Swedish perspective.

The project will be completed in spring 2023.
