Constraints on organic farming (CONSTRAINTS)

Conversion to organic farming in Sweden has stagnated around 15% of the agricultural area despite political goals to increase the area to 30%. In this project we will: (1) synthesize knowledge regarding the potential for policy to overcome constraints on converting to organic agriculture, (2) evaluate the agricultural, economic and environmental impacts of greater conversion at regional levels; and (3) discuss the optimal mix of conventional and organic agriculture given societal goals.

The project is in collaboration with the Department of Crop Production Ecology, SLU and the Centre for Environmental and Climate Research (CEC) and is financed by Formas. It is coordinated by Henrik Smith (CEC) and is expected to be completed in 2024.
