Reducing the quota for vendace – how are prices affected?

The Swedish quota for vendace was reduced substantially in 2021 following biological advice that recommended a ban on fishing. As catches declined the price of vendace increased. This differs from the situation for many other species in Sweden where prices are often not affected by changes in catches. Thus, there is a need to examine how the market reacts to changes in the vendace quota and how the economic situation of fishers is affected. Is there a statistical relationship between quantity and price? Could higher prices compensate for lower quantities leaving incomes of fishers unaffected?

The project is commissioned by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and is finalised in autumn 2022.
